Chapter Twelve

ANNA RETURNED TO DARION’S unit and spent the rest of the day taking advantage of his luxurious Level 10 accommodations. He had stocked up on things a man would never find useful. She buffed her nails, used cosmetics, and took extra care with her hair. She even dressed in a thin silk dress, ready to do whatever it took to convince Darion she’d decided to stay. It’s what Troy wanted, the only way to make things right with him.

Hearing Darion walking through the living room, she started toward the bedroom door but stopped short, listening to the low muttering of men’s voices. He wasn’t alone. Anna shrugged. It didn’t matter. She pushed open the door and entered the living area.

Darion’s brows lifted slightly and his jaw slacked.

“I’m sorry. You have a guest,” she said, suddenly feeling she should have waited to make an appearance until they were alone.

Darion extended an arm to his guest. “Yes. This is Keito.”

The man’s elegance was striking. The front of his ebony hair fell slick over one side of his forehead, while the rest spiked sharply in an intentionally haphazard style, but that was the only thing about him that didn’t demand respect. He wore a high-collared fitted black coat with silver closures that curved from his right shoulder down to the center. The matching dark pants were tucked neatly into high polished boots trimmed with silver buttons.

She dipped her head courteously and lowered her eyes. Why hadn’t she worn something less revealing? The room was much too cool for such a thin dress.

“A pleasure to meet you,” Keito said. “Unfortunately I cannot stay, but our mutual friend will entertain you honorably, I am certain. Excuse me, please.”

He clicked across the floor to the door, followed closely by Darion. The two whispered something before Keito took his leave.

Darion gripped the back of his neck a moment and returned to his desk, glancing only briefly at Anna, who still shivered in the living room.

She stepped nearer to him. “You’ve had a stressful day?”

“Yes, it was.” He continued working at his computer.

“Is something wrong?” she asked.

When he still didn’t give her the attention she hoped for, she moved closer and placed a hand on his shoulder. “I’ve been thinking about your offer.”

His brows furrowed.. “Don’t pretend with me.”

She was surprised at his dismissive expression but gathered her resolve and circled around to face him. “I just want to get to know you…before I make my decision.” The lie tasted bitter on her tongue.

Darion searched her eyes for the truth. She stepped backward instinctively but remembered her plan.

She encouraged him to follow her to the couch. “Come on. Keito promised you’d entertain me.”

He turned off his computer screen and trailed her to the couch, where she patted the cushion next to her. He sat close but stiffly. She edged closer, curling her legs up on the couch, the dress riding up on her thighs. “Who is Keito?”

His eyes swept over her legs. “I know what you’re doing.”

Anna’s pulse skipped.
